Do Whippets need clothing?
Yes. Whippets have very little body fat and a short coat. During colder months many Whippets benefit from an insulating layer, particularly when resting, walking or after exercise. The right clothing should provide warmth without restricting their naturally long stride.
What temperature should a Whippet wear a coat?
Most healthy adult Whippets begin benefiting from an additional layer once temperatures fall into the low teens, especially in damp or windy weather. Individual tolerance varies depending on age, health, body condition and activity level. Puppies, seniors and dogs with low body fat often need protection sooner.
Why is Whippet clothing different from regular dog clothing?
Whippets can reach speeds of around 35 mph (56 km/h), making them one of the fastest dog breeds in the world. Clothing designed for slower, broader breeds rarely accommodates that range of motion.
Whippets have a unique combination of a deep chest, narrow waist and exceptionally long stride. Breed-specific clothing follows the Whippet's anatomy instead of forcing the dog to adapt to the garment.
Can Whippets wear Italian Greyhound clothing?
Sometimes, but not usually.
Although the breeds share a similar silhouette, adult Whippets are generally larger, broader through the chest and shoulders, and have longer backs. Clothing designed specifically for Whippets is more likely to provide full coverage while allowing unrestricted movement.
How should Whippet clothing fit?
A well-fitted garment should sit close to the body without pulling across the shoulders or chest. It should stay in place while running, leave the elbows free to move naturally and finish above the wrists and hocks so nothing catches during sprinting.
